Babe Zaharias Engraved Rolex Oyster Perpetual Watch Gifted to Husband George

Presented in this lot is Babe Zaharias' engraved 1955 Rolex 36 mm Oyster perpetual watch with an 18k yellow gold case and jubilee bracelet she gifted to her husband George. It contains a red date wheel, egg shell and color dial. There is a fluted bezel, acrylic crystal and dagger markers/ hands outlining the face. The dial remains in great condition for its year of production (1955). It contains the original super oyster Rolex crown. Under magnifying glass, on the SA 750 gold stamped clasp is the date of '01' above '55' - signifying the vintage of this timepiece as the first quarter of the year 1955. There is wear and droop consistent with its period and has been repaired twice on the bracelet as depicted in accompanying lot photos. We are pleased to report that this prized watch is in working order.

When 10-time major champion and LPGA Founder Babe Zaharias was in New York city on some business with George in 1955, they made a stop in at a Rolex shop to look around. Rolex, unsurprisingly, gave her a watch just for being Babe - the year that her cancer would tragically come back. She then talks the store into giving George one (free of cost) and they engraved it for her. This wristwatch from the revered maker that officially registered their iconic 'Rolex' name in 1908 represents a crossover item, appealing to both high-end watch connoisseurs and appreciation for golf history.
