Gene Sarazen 1922 US Open 'Playing My Second Round At Skokie' Original Photo - Sarazen Collection
A prized hobby entrant from Gene Sarazen's personal photo archives is this hand-notated original photo of Sarazen at the 1922 US Open - his first major victory and over T-2 Bobby Jones none-the-less. The black and white original is hand notated with the highly significant inscription 'Playing My Second Round at Skokie - July 14, 1922.' For this lot we step back over a half century in time, the year was 1922. Sarazen, a green 20 year old American club professional took a much needed leap of faith that would change his life and the history of golf as we know it. For the first time he would play in a professional golf major, but to use the word "play" would be to sell him short. After working with a fellow tour player on the side for a couple months he felt ready for the contest at Skokie Country Club, that years U.S. Open. He exceeded expectations that week in July 1922. Coming storming back from four strokes behind to win the Glencoe, Illinois-based tournament, a single stroke clear of John Black and an amateur named Bobby Jones. A signed letter of provenance from Mary Ann Sarazen will come with this lot. 6 x 3 1/2"
