1969 LA Open Tournament Program Signed by Charlie Sifford
Charlie Sifford turned professional in 1944, and after being subjected to threats and racial abuse in an attempt to play on the PGA Tour finally was accepted on that Tour in 1954. He was the first African-American to have success on the PGA circuit with two career wins in 1967 at the Hartford Open and 1969 at the Los Angeles Open. Sifford came out blazing at the '69 L.A. Open posting a 63 (28 on the back nine) in the first round. Harold Henning would tie Sifford at 276 over the regulation 72 holes. The sudden death playoff between the two was decided quickly when Charlie birdied the first hole. The program from Sifford's win at the L.A. Open is offered here in Excellent condition, with the Hall of Famer Sifford adding a black sharpie autograph to the cover. James Spence Authentication provides a letter of authenticity with this lot.
