1963 Thunderbird Classic at Westchester Golf Club - Arnold Palmer Victory
Arnold Palmer's win at the 1963 Thunderbird Classic held at Westchester Golf Club just outside New York was a tuneup for the 1963 United States Open which was contested a short flight for Palmer the following week at The Country Club just outside Boston. Palmer playing in top form finished in a regulation tie in both events. At the Thunderbird, Palmer would win a sudden death playoff (10th win in 13 playoff tries) over Paul Harney with a par 3 on the first extra hole. Unfortunately he was not as lucky the next week falling in an 18 hole playoff to Julius Boros for the U.S. Open Championship.
