1957 US Open at Inverness Club Program - Dick Mayer Winner
Cary Middlecoff would not claim consecutive US Open victories as Dick Mayer proved too much a 18-hole Sunday playoff to win his only major title. The 54-hole lead was held by the 47 year old Jimmy Demaret, who would've become the oldest U.S. Open champion. Only one birdie was carded during the high 90's temperature during the Sunday playoff it saw Mayer shoot a 72 to Middlecoff's 79. This U.S. Open also witnessed the debut of 17-year-old amateur Jack Nicklaus who unfortunately carded back to back 80's to miss the cut.
