1973 US Open at Oakmont Guest Pin #768

As the 43-year-old hometown hero Arnold Palmer reached Oakmont's 11th hole on Sunday's final round of the 1973 U.S. Open he thought that he was in command to win the Open again. However Johnny Miller that day was putting together a round for the ages, through 15 holes he was eight under par on the day and had actually taken a one stroke lead over Palmer. Miller would par the last three holes to finish the back 9 in 31 strokes while Palmer went away over the closing holes. Miller had hit every green, all but one fairway, and averaged nine feet for each of his staggering nine birdies in route to a final round record setting 63 which produced the overall Championship winning score of 279. A fine example of the 1973 United States Open "Guest" weekly badge is offered here. This badge is in brillant condition free from nicks or scrapes. it measures 2 1/8" in diameter and features the familiar Oakmont squirrel logo.
