1907 Great Yarmouth Golf Club Captains Prize Sterling Flask

This nice carry sized 3 ¾ “ x 3 ¾ “ flask was issued to the winner of the 30th August 1907 Bogey Competition at the Great Yarmouth Golf Club. The Great Yarmouth Golf Club was founded in 1882. In 1913 it merged with the Caister-On-Sea Golf club and is now known as Great Yarmouth and Caister Golf Club. Interestingly the club prides itself on being the home of the Bogey. Per an article in the 1932 Coventry Herald, the club originated and named bogey competitions in the early 1890s . According to a series of golf history questions on the USGA website, The term 'bogey' comes from a song that was popular in the British Isles in the early 1890s, called ""The Bogey Man"" . In the article mentioned above a club captain at the time stated that an accomplished player such as the bogey man should have a name and proposed that he should be named “Colonel Bogey” . On the flask, below the Great Yarmouth golf club emblem at the time, is engraved “Captains Prize, Bogey Competition, 30th August 1907, Won by Walter Gowwndes, 2 Up” A nice sterling flask with connections to one of the most historical and used terms in golf.
