1937 Western Open Championship Contestant Pin - Canterbury - Guldahl Winner


In 1937 Dallas native Ralph Guldahl came to Canterbury Golf Club and took home the 2nd of his 3 straight Western Open titles in a playoff over Horton Smith. Guldahl was arguably the best golfer in the world during the late 1930’s having won the three aforementioned Western Open titles from 36-38 and winning back to back US Open’s in 37 & 38 and the Masters Tournament in 1939. In all, Guldahl won 14 times from 1932-1941. Guldahl and Smith finished tied at the end of the 72-hole tournament each posting scores of even par 288. But it was Guldahl who fired a steady even par 72 in the playoff to post a 4 shot victory over Smith who could only manage a 76. 1 1/2" diameter
