Lot of Two Course Logo Balls Signed by Frank Stranahan from PGA Wins
When Frank Stranahan won the PGA's 1945 Durham Open as an amateur against an elite field of professionals, it was not all that unexpected as he was already well respected and tested against professionals like Byron Nelson and Ben Hogan. After a lengthy amateur career, he turned professional at 32 years old in 1954, Frank Stranahan would win two PGA tour events giving him six career Tour wins. His final triumph on the PGA Tour came at the 1958 Los Angeles Open contested at Rancho Park. A first round 67 by his old amateur adversary Smiley Quick which left him one stroke off the lead may have been all the added incentive Frank needed.The turning point of the '58 LA Open would come on the 9th hole of Sunday's final round as Stranahan hit his second shot close to the fence which lined the fairway and he was considering asking for a ruling which would allow him to drop away from the fence. He decided to hit the ball as it lay. This shot stopped one foot from the pin, tapping it in for his birdie, he went on to finish with a 67 for the second straight day on the weekend. His score of 9 under par a total of 275 put Stranahan again at the champion's award ceremony. This lot offers course logo golf balls from the first PGA event Stranhan would win the Durham Open played at Hope Valley Country Club (HVCC) and his last win at the Los Angeles Open Rancho Park. Each ball has been signed with his full name Frank R. Stranahan in black sharpie. James Spence Authentication (JSA) has reviewed each signature, and their letter of authenticity comes with this lot.
