Gene Sarazen & Macdonald Smith posing after completion of the record-setting 2nd Tie break round of the 1926 Metropolitan Open. Still tied, they would ultimately play a third tie-break round with Smith shooting a mind-numbing seven under par 66 to finally sink Sarazen and take the title. International Newsreel NYC Rare and Striking Photo that appeared in the Worcester (MA) Gazette. Photo from the estate of 1920’s Worcester (MA) Gazette Editor Joseph DeWolfe. Includes original typed HEADLINE and Description “SARAZEN AND SMITH SET RECORD IN MET TOURNEY”. Photo measures 6.5” wide X 8.5” high and is credited on July 19, 1926. M. Smith ‘s golf swing was said to be the most observed of the hickory era, and eventually modeled by Ben Hogan. Smith won 24 times on the early PGA Tour and finished runner up in 3 majors, including twice to Bobby Jones during his 1930 Grand Slam year!
