'The Pebble Beach Architects' Lot - Jack Neville and Douglas Grant
Samuel Morse for the layout at Pebble Beach Golf Links turned to two amateur golfers with no previous course design work on their resumes. They were Jack Neville and Douglas Grant. Morse found the right two men, and his gamble turned into the famed world class golf course. Offered here in this lot of three items is a Neville hand composed and signed letter dated 1961 in which the amateur golfer turned designer makes mention of Bobby Jones' first round of golf in California. A charity event, that earned $12,000 for the cause. Neville, an accomplished amateur player, had been paired with Jones for the first two rounds of medal play in the 1929 U.S. Amateur contested at Pebble Beach. The second item in this lot comes from the other architect of the famed Pebble Beach layout who was Douglas Grant. His signature is offered here on a 3x5 sized postcard. The third and final item of this grouping is a vintage photo of Grant, taken at Royal St. Georges Golf Club. Grant would rise to the distinguished title of Captain at this famed Sandwich, England club.
