January 13, 1933 Augusta National Opening Day Letter on Earliest Known Augusta National Golf Course Letterhead-SIGNIFICANT CONTENT!
"THIS WAS SOMETHING GREAT THAT OCCURRED TODAY. BOTH FOR AUGUSTA AND FOR THE GOLFING WORLD" those are the words that appear in the offered letter on Augusta National letterhead from J. "Reed" Henderson who participated in the morning events on the Opening Day of the Augusta National that January 13, 1933. His smitten love letter to Mary with composition date miraculously on the very afternoon of the Opening of the National lends insight to this most significant of days in golf history and coincides well with Clifford Roberts account on page 39 of his work "The Story of the Augusta National Golf Club". Henderson's letter on this earliest of known Augusta National letterhead goes into detail of the enormous crowds which turned out, referencing the National as "Bobby" Jones golf club. It is known from Roberts book that he alone gathered 100 new and prospective members to make the train ride from New York to Augusta for golf at this grand opening affair. In this short paragraph long type written letter from Henderson we are enlightened to previously unknown details of the day. This lot affords a one-of-a-kind opportunity for the Augusta National (Masters) collector to have a first hand account of the momentous day the Augusta National was born. Letter remains in excellent condition with standard mailing folds present. (Please also see lots #14 & 45 which offers early Augusta National material from same source)
