Jack Nicklaus and Tommy Bolt Signed Firestone Embroidered Flag
The Rubber City Open was the first PGA Tour event to be contested at Firestone Country Club in Akron, Ohio. The event was won by Tommy Bolt in 1954, his 7th of 15 career wins for the Hall of Famer. Firestone C.C. will always hold a special place in the heart of Jack Nicklaus. It was where he started his remarkable career, playing in his first PGA tournament, the Rubber City Open, back in 1958, when he was an 18-year-old. Nicklaus' successes at Firestone, included winning the 1968 American Golf Classic, the 1975 PGA Championship, and the 1976 World Series of Golf. Nicklaus in his own words presents why this is such a special combo flag, "I played with Charlie Sifford the first two rounds and I shot 66-67 and was one shot behind Art Wall. Tommy Bolt was one shot behind me, and he was the U.S. Open champion, and we played together the next day. Here's an 18-year-old kid playing with the U.S. Open champion and had a chance to win a golf tournament. "I remember Tommy putting his arm around me walking down the first hole. 'Don't worry, Jackie boy, old Tommy will take care of you. He was giving me the business right off the bat. I missed six three-foot putts on the front nine, little short things. Tommy didn't bother with me. He got rid of me fast on the front nine. It's part of the education of a golfer." Presented on a vintage Firestone actual course flown flag (not from 1958 tournament)is the combo of Hall of Famers signatures in Bolt and Nicklaus which bring back so many memories, including Jack in his first PGA event. James Spence Authentication (JSA) provide authenticity for this very unique combo (most likely one of a kind) pairing of Bolt and Nicklaus autographs.
