Jack Nicklaus Signed Official Used 1971 PGA Championship FINAL ROUND Scorecard - 9th of 18 Majors
Few pieces give a visual and contextual nod to golf history as much as this prized possession, the 18-time major Jack Nicklaus' signed and used official final round, Sunday scorecard amidst clinching a major victory (THE ONLY KNOWN ONE TO BE PUBLICLY OFFERED). The 1971 PGA Championship saw the 31 year old Nicklaus lead wire-to-wire to claim the Major title, and with this win became the first player in history to complete the modern career Grand Slam for a second time. It records a one-over par score of 73 for Jack, who was not pressured in the final round with the final margin of victory only reduced by second place finisher Billy Casper notching birdies on the 17th and 18th holes. Entering the final round at a score of 208, Nicklaus held an impressive four stroke lead in the Championship after three rounds over South African Gary Player. This card as issued by the PGA, carried and filled out that day by tour veteran Gibby Gilbert comes duly signed in 10/10 pencil by Scorer Gibby Gilbert and Contestant Jack Nicklaus. It bears Jack's personal check marks of acknowledgment above each score. The
2:12 starting tee time, as well as his winning total score of 281 is calculated in the upper right-hand corner. The official scorecard bears consistent use from traveling 18 holes around the course with Gilbert. This includes some staining on front, and a paperclip mark on the back of card. Neither of these would hinder display value of this treasured item. Letter of Provenance from PGA of America Historian comes with this lot. Jack Nicklaus match used memorabilia represents a market on the rise as the Golden Bear marked his 80th birthday earlier this year. This final round scorecard from one of his record setting 18 Majors (the only known one to be offered publicly) adds an exclamation point to that statement, and is a must have museum quality addition to any collection. A letter of from PGA Historian Bob Denney will accompany this lot.
