1955 Banshees Award for Sportsmanship - 9-15-1955
Jack Fleck was honored by a New York City literary group known as The Banshees on September 15, 1955 at the Waldorf-Astoria. He received the clubs "Award for Sportsmanship". The wording of Fleck's award contained these most appropriate phrases "Always Given Your All" and "Odds Hopelessly Against You". That well summed up his triumph just three short months earlier over Ben Hogan in the 18-hole playoff for the 1955 U.S. Open title. Highlighting the bottom of his certificate awarded by The Banshees are the hand signed signatures from club members Bob Considine, Arthur "Bugs" Baer and Gene Tunney. Consindine was best known for co-writing "Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo" and "The Babe Ruth Story". Baer was the noted columnist of 'One Word Led to Another' that gained him the title of the country's best known humorist. He is also credited with hanging the name "Sultan of Swat" on Babe Ruth, and being the inspiration for some of Milton Berle humor. Tunney is better known in the boxing circles as the World Heavyweight Champion from 1926-28. A time that saw the Hall of Famer defeat Jack Dempsey twice. The valued autographs of Considine, Baer and especially Tunney have been reviewed by James Spence Authentication (JSA) and their letter of authenticity will come with this lot.
