1960 US Open Contestants Badge - Palmer's Only US Open Win and Greatest Open Comeback

Arnold Palmer staged the greatest comeback in U.S. Open history firing a 65 in the final round (posting a score of -4 for the four rounds). He erased a seven-stroke deficit entering the final round. The rising amateur Jack Nicklaus was second at (-2). Jack Fleck also found the Cherry Hills Country Club outside Denver, Colorado to his liking posting scores of 70-70-72-71 (-1) to finish in a tie for third place. Offered in this lot is Fleck's 1 1/2" x 1 1/2" contestants badge from the very historically significant 1960 U.S. Open. For the 1960 Open the U.S.G.A and its long time manufactuer of their contestants pins, The Robbins Co. of Attlesboro, Mass came up with a new pin design which incorpated the individual players name at the bottom of the badge. They would employ this design throughout the years with the only significant change being to the reverse which would switch from pin back to money clip format. This contestants pin from Palmer's only U.S. Open Championship is extremely limited in the golf memorabilia marketplace(with only the 150 players in the field ever laying claim to having one displaying their name). With the opportunity to ever own Palmer, Nicklaus or Hogan's contestant's pins from the '60 Open most likely impossible. The case can be made that the finest example to be had is available right now in this auction in the Jack Fleck pin worn by the 1955 U.S. Open Champ and third place finisher in '60 during this remarkable U.S. Open.
