Horton Smith's 1937 North & South Open Championship Winner's 14k Balfour Medal
Up for auction here is the inaugural Masters Tournament Champion and first two-time winner (1934 and 1936) Horton Smith's 1937 North & South Open Championship Winner's 14k Balfour Medal. The reverse of this exquisite Pinehurst Golf Club medal is inscribed in script engraving "Winner North and South Open Championship March 23-25 1937." The '14k Balfour' precious metal mark lies below, also on the verso. The World War II veteran was long-time head golf professional at the Detroit Golf Club in Michigan, as well as Oak Park in Illinois. Horton Smith was also a popular choice for the American Ryder Cup team, representing his country in five straight tournaments starting in 1929. As seen in the photographs, Smith's medal presents extremely well and Pinehurst spared no expense during the production of the medal. 1 1/2" diameter
