Horton Smith's 1931 2nd Annual St Paul Junior Association Open Championship Winner's 10k Medal
Up for auction here is the inaugural Masters Tournament Champion and first two-time winner (1934 and 1936) Horton Smith's 1931 2nd Annual St Paul Junior Association Open Championship Winner's 10k Medal. Smith would win the St Paul Open in both 1931 and 1941. The reverse of this exquisite St Paul Junior Association Commence medal is inscribed in an extensive engraving reading "1st Prize 2nd Annual St Paul Junior Association of Commerce 10,000 Open Golf Tournament July 24 to 26 1931 Horton Smith Score 278." The '10k' precious metal mark lies below, also on the verso. The World War II veteran was long-time head golf professional at the Detroit Golf Club in Michigan, as well as Oak Park in Illinois. Horton Smith was also a popular choice for the American Ryder Cup team, representing his country in five straight tournaments starting in 1929. As seen in the photographs, Smith's medal presents extremely well and The St Paul Junior Association of Commerce spared no expense during the production of the scalloped edge medal.
