Hal Sutton's 1981 OPEN Championship Low Amateur Silver Medal

From the steady hand of a master artisan appointed by the hallowed Royal and Ancient reads, "Open Golf Championship 1981," formed on the smooth surface of this silver Low Amateur medal awarded to Hal Sutton forty years ago. Double ridges encircle the medal, with recipient "Hal Sutton" etched in uppercase in the center of two accent lines. The English precious metal silver hallmark "T&S" is stamped in three conjoined circles on the verso of his silver medal represents the fine work of Turner & Simpson of Birmingham. Decorated amateur Hal Sutton was a mere one shot from the lead after the first day at Royal and St. George in Sandwich, England, carding a tidy 71 and a tie for 3rd position. The 1981 playing would be the first Open Championship contested by the young American from Shreveport, Louisiana, ending the week in a tie for 47th and the prestigious honor of Low Amateur. "Decorated" was an undersell, as Hal Sutton had checked nearly every amateur golf box prior to his Open Championship debut. Sutton captured the 1980 US Amateur, 1980 College Player of the Year, and was a two-time Walker Cup United States Team member among other accomplishments, setting himself up well to handle the big stage and win the PGA Championship only two years later in 1983. Champion Golfer of the Year Bill Rogers would be crowned in 1981, his career defining major championship by way of a four stroke victory over Bernhard Langer. This is surely one of the finest pieces in Hal Sutton's collection, a seldom seen Low Amateur medal from the oldest major championship in golf. This prize represents a welcomed addition to even the most advanced of collections. A signed letter of authenticity from Hal Sutton comes with this lot.
