Gene Sarazen 1935 Tour Season Used Wilson 'Gene Sarazen' Four Wood
The year of 1935 carries much significance when looking back at not only the first Grand Slam member Gene Sarazen's career, but The Masters Tournament and the rich history of golf when a man they called 'The Squire' won the tournament in extra holes over Craig Wood by way of a miraculous 235 yard shot on hole #15 in the final round. It would be a four wood that he used in what was later dubbed 'The Shot Heard 'Round The World.' This offering features a four wood used by Sarazen during that year of 1935, without confirmation that it was in his bag that specific day. Each Year John Hamilton of the Newport Sports Museum and his supporters would reach out to the champion and request a club or putter used to win the tournament. This was not used to win the tournament, and was gifted years later. John’s Newport Sports Museum opened in 1995 and remained open to 2014 when it shut its doors. John’s collecting started in 1953 and he had many supporters that helped get him access to winning players and teams to amass his great collection. Thru his connections he was able to obtain an autographed baseball from each years World Series winning team. John was a huge golf fan and had purchased a set of Dwight Eisenhower’s clubs directly from Mamie, Dwight’s wife. Items from the Newport Sports Museum are always of the utmost authenticity and were normally obtained directly from the player or team by John or his large group of supporters in the world of sports. This Gene Sarazen 1935 Tour Season Used Wilson 'Gene Sarazen' Four Wood was obtained by Hamilton from Henway Sports & Specialties Inc, with a copy of that certificate of authenticity shown in lot #10 including the provenance from that acquisition.
