G.D. Johnson Signed 1916 Handwritten Letter on Chicago GC Letterhead to Charles 'Chick' Evans - Ty Cobb Comparison

Young G.D. Johnson wasn't too far off with his 1916 cross-sports comparison of Chick Evans to Detroit Tigers slugger Ty Cobb. Both greats, with Evans winning the US Open with a record score of 286 only months earlier. The plea for Evans' bag by Johnson exudes confidence in them as a team "...As you are the Golf King I would like to be the Champion Caddie next summer. Yours Truly, G.D. Johnson." Nicknamed 'Shorty' Chicago Golf Club's Johnson would earn Evans bag. Hard work and self-confidence pays off, just ask J.D. Johnson. Accompanying scans supporting this golfer-caddy relationship are included in this lot, one being from the Chick Evans' Golf Book page 128.

Charles "Chick" Evans was regarded as one of the best amateur golfers of his generation and a better iron-player than any of the professionals during his time. His many accomplishments include being the first amateur to win the Western Open in 1910 and the first amateur to win the U.S. Open as well as the U.S. Amateur in the same year. Possibly aiding in his accomplishments, Evans had some personal philosophies that he would abide by. One being "I made a rule never to swing a golf club except to hit a golf ball, for I had learned that one could swing beautifully when the ball wasn’t there, and poorly when it was".
