1941 Trans-Mississippi Amateur Trophy - Frank Stranahan
The Trans-Mississippi was first contested in 1901, and had already become one of the most prestigious titles in amateur golf when Frank Stranahan won the event in 1941 at Sunset Country Club in St. Louis, Missouri. This event continued to be the top proving ground for premiere amateur talent when Jack Nicklaus posted repeat victories in the Trans-Am in 1959 & '60, and today well into its second 100 years of play it is the place to be for top amateur golfers. At 18-years old in 1941, Stranahan was the youngest champion in the 41-year history of the tournament. He accompolished the feat in most decisive fashion having advanced through qualifying and his early matches to face John Barnum in the 36-hole match play final. Stranny steam rolled Barnum shooting a 64 in the morning round to go seven up at the lunch break. Barnum was a game competitor, in fact he was even par for 31 holes on the day when the match came to a merciful end and a final victory margin of 6 and 5 for Frank. This marked the first of what would be a long string of impressive triumphs against ever escalating fields of competition. For his triumph, Stranahan received the robust trophy with figural golfer adorning its appex. Among the horde of trophies captured by Stranny this one stands out as one of his finest for accomplishment, appearance, and the condition it remains in 73 years later. Simply engraved it states:
