Douglas McEwan Hand-Written Letter on D. McEwan & Son Letterhead

Dated October 21st, 1903 and addressed to a 'Walter A. Wade, Esq.' the note discusses golf balls and is transcribed as best we can as follows:

Dear Sir,
In reply to yours of yesterday (?)
the marks on the balls were (?) on by the
Glasgow. (?) exhibition of golf these
balls formed a part of the collection (?)
by us. The old Dutch made balls
mentioned in Cuttay were doubtless made in
the same manner as those you have but
never saw any of them. So far as I know
the feather ball was used all along till
superceded by the Gutta
At present I am not in a position
to offer you any more of these
balls but will keep in mind what
you say. I will let you know if
at anytime I can accommodate you
Yours very sincerely
Douglas McEwan

The club makers of outstanding repute in the early 19th century were the McEwan brothers of Musselburgh, notably Douglas, whose clubs were described as models of symmetry and shape. They were artists at a time when clubs were passing from “rude and clumsy bludgeons” to a new and handsome look. 14 3/4" x 13 1/4"
