Don Cherry's Personal 1955 Walker Cup Team Green Jacket

Offered here for bidders is Don Cherry's personal Walker Cup team green jacket from 1955 as issued to him by the United States Golf Association for that year's matches. The stylish blazer was tailored by Robert Rollins of New York displaying pocket crest and buttons which bear the logo of the event and the U.S.G.A. The jacket remains in highly presentable, suitable for display, condition and exhibits consistent use. The Old Course at St. Andrews hosted the Walker Cup matches in 1955, where the American team defeated Great Britain & Ireland 10 to 2. Don Cherry and E. H. Ward won their foursome match on day 1 and Cherry defeated J. B. Carr 5 & 4 in singles play on the second day. No size tag is present on the jacket, though presumed to be size large.

Don Cherry was a nightclub headline singer by profession in the 1950's and 60's with a hit song entitled "Band of Gold". His most lucrative work would come as the voice of animated character Mr. Clean in TV detergent commercials of the time. Singer by night, but accomplished golfer by day, Cherry was so good he would turn to professional golf in 1962, after a considerable career as an amateur. In 1952, he was a semifinalist in the United States Golf Association Amateur and was chosen for the Walker Cup team in 1953, 1955, and 1961. He won all singles and foursome matches in which he played. During the '52 Amateur he defeated Frank Stranahan and Gene Littler in third and fourth round matches. The following year in '53 he captured the Canadian Amateur Championship, and followed up in '54 with a win at the prestigious Sunnehanna Amateur. Cherry was a contestant in nine Masters Tournaments, making seven cuts. His closest brush with a Major victory came at the 1960 US Open, as an amateur, when he contended into the fourth round eventually finishing in a three way tie with Ben Hogan for ninth place at even par, four strokes back of the come-from-behind champion Arnold Palmer.
