Detailed Henry Picard ALS Letter

The letter reads as follows:

Dear Mark,

I'll try to make a reply to your letter of March 27th

What I am going to write will seem most odd but sorry to say it is true

During 1933 I do believe Walter Hagen played in the N & S Carolina Open at Greensboro. Yes we tied, on the playoff I shot 69 Walter shot 79.

In the spring of 1934 Walter Hagen played in the Charleston Azalea Open. I was professional at Char CC at the time. Coming to the last hole Walter had me by two shots. I made a 4 and Walter looked at me. Said "I am going to miss this one foot putt and it will look better for you if I only win the 72 hole tournament by one shot." Yes all the good pros of that era played in the tournament, Hagen missed the putt.

From Charleston I played in the first Masters Tournament. Sadly I did not play well there

After the Masters Tournament the team(?) took up to the N & S Tournament at Pinehurst N.C.

Coming to the last round and on I played the 17th hole and was on the green. Walter Hagen was on the #16 fairway opposite to the green side(?) on and yelled over - "How do you stand?" I said "I am leading by one shot". He told his caddie "pick up my ball and wait until I get to the green". Once he reached the green, he asked me what color the green was. I said white like and was fast. In those days the the tournament was played on sand greens. Hagen said play away. Yes I two putted and started for #18 green. As I entered the tee again Hagen asked me what I saw on the rite of the fairway out about 270 yards? I replied a bunker and I won't be in it. He said play away. Also Armour and many other great players of that age and age before watched me play the last hole. Many say they all treated me great. Yes I won by two shots, a story you'll find hard to believe but it wall happened as I stated(?) it

Sincerely,
HG Picard
