Claude Harmon Signed Cut W/Original Wire Photo His Famous Shot of 1948 Masters Win - Full JSA Letter
Claude Harmon is widely regarded as the most challenging past Masters Champion's signature for collectors to obtain. The career club professional chose to serve at Winged Foot Golf Club from 1945 until 1978, rather than play on the professional tour. This choice kept his tournament appearances and exposure to the public limited. Few foresaw the golf or sports memorabilia markets being what they are today during that time. Without the intuition to secure a Claude Harmon signature, the majority of the students and friends that he taught at Winged Foot, Seminole and Thunderbird were attentive and focused solely on improving their golf game and not realizing the value their teachers autograph had as an early Masters champion. This example of the 1948 Masters Champion Claude Harmon's signature is in ink on paper that is dated 1965 on the reverse of item appears the autographs of Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer. The piece has slight discoloration and marks of adhesive, neither negatively affecting the signature. This lot contains a second item almost of equal significance, certainly to photo collectors, an original Acme wire photo of Harmon in action at the '48 Masters. This well preserved near mint image shows Harmon hitting out of the water at the 15th hole of his third round. His miraculous recovery shot saved the round and helped propel Harmon to the 1948 Masters Championship. Verso of image retains original cut-line caption and bears traditional wire service stampings from Acme.
