Circa 1899-1905 Clark & Sowdon 'The Game of Golf' Tokalon Series Board Game - Great Colors

An aesthetically pleasing mixed foursome golf scene boasting vibrant color adorns this turn of the century 'The Game of Golf' box published by Clark & Sowdon of New York. The lady golfers are depicted clad in dresses and hats, with one gentleman in a customary red coat and the other in a matching striped outfit in the foreground of rolling hills. Once the box top is lifted the game board is revealed, featuring the intricate twists and turns of this course along with a nine hole layout. Included is a a spinning arrow and three colored counters. The directions of the 'Game of Golf' are printed on the reverse of the box top. Very fittingly the word "Tokalon" of 'Tokalon Series' in Greek means beautiful. The Tokalon marking was characteristic of the board game artwork that was produced by the highly acclaimed Clark & Sowdon.

Thebiggamehunter.com explains that Clark & Sowdon produced these the exceptional board game box top artwork from 1892 until 1899, when partner William Sowdon passed away and the company name changed to E.O. Clark. Other games they worked on were 'Coonies', 'Gipsy Fortune Teller' and 'Peter Coddles Dinner Party.' The second source, 'The Game Catalog:US Games Through 1950 - GameCaralog.org,' states that it was produced as part of the Tokalon Series circa 1905. The piece is a great representation of early American golf history. It is in good condition, with wear on the edging of the box top. 10 1/2" x 19 1/2."
