Charles Blair Macdonald's Personal 1929 Commissioned Oil on Canvas Painting by Albert Sterner

Surely a fine art example that even the most advanced of collections, be they private or museum in nature, would be deemed incomplete without ownership of is this original oil on canvas masterpiece. When it comes to an influential hall of fame resume MacDonald had all the facets of the game covered. Tutored by Old Tom Morris, Charles began playing golf matches with prominent golfers of the day on the Old Course at St. Andrews, including Young Tom Morris. As a player he won the first United States Amateur in 1895 by the match play score of 12&11 (which is still the record winning margin to this day). With his course design work that includes Chicago Golf Club and the National Golf Links, Macdonald earned the title of "Father of American Golf Architecture". Finally as a pioneer of golf in the Americas this visionary became a driving force in the founding of the U.S.G.A. Donald.

Charles Blair (C.B.) Macdonald (1855-1939) hand picked the artist that would do his most significant portrait on canvas. This artist was chosen to not only capture Macdonald's likeness for his client's purposes, ten years prior to his passing, but would be admired for generations after him. Here we are, unable to look away from the commissioned oil painting by Albert Sterner (1863-1946) that features Macdonald with his legs crossed and a club in his hand. His own canvas and masterpiece of National Golf Links of America's windmill is found in the distance to the left. The Depiction gives great attention to detail and is painted with primarily dark hues bringing out the light areas such as the white in his shirt and sweater, as well as his face. Nearly a century later this "fire place painting" remains one of the most coveted golfer portraits, for those that appreciate artwork and golf history in the same sentence. Presented in this time-period gold framed, Paris trained artist Albert Sterner painted his first and last name on the bottom right just above "1929" in vibrant red. The accomplished Albert Sterner's portfolio included work for publications 'Harper's Magazine,' 'Scribner's,' and 'Collier's.' The reverse of the canvas has large a pencil notation. There is very slight crazing, only noticed when inspecting the painting from up close and common of this medium for its age. 44" x 53 1/2"
