Bobby Jones' Only Winner’s Trophy Ever Offered - 1916 Cherokee CC Inv. Trophy as 14yr Old
It is our distinct pleasure to offer Mr. Bobby Jones' only publicly offered winning golf trophy in which he captured at the young age of 14 years old at the Cherokee CC Invitational. The well-documented tournament in 1916, hosted by the Cherokee CC in Knoxville, TN was a 3-day match-play affair that welcomed 128 contestants, including a teenager from the Atlanta area who at the time was relatively unheard of - Robert Tyre Jones Jr. The final match would come down to Jones and Rome, Georgia's Simpson Dean. "Bobby" Jones would only need 14 of the 18 holes to claim a 5 and 4 victory.
Word of 'Little Bobby,' as he was referred to, spread across the country quickly. In 1916, Jones would also play in the US Amateur at Merion GC, his first major championship, and win the Georgia Amateur. Bobby Jones claimed the 1930 Grand Slam 'Impregnable Quadrilateral' sixteen years later, retire from competitive golf and co-found both the Augusta National Golf Club and The Masters Tournament.
'Cherokee Country Club - Invitation Tournament - 1916 Winner Championship Flight - R.T. Jones JR.' is engraved on the bowl of this highly prized single-handled pitcher. It is stamped 'Sterling' and '3 1/2 Pints.' The final photo is for reference only, as the collage includes three newspaper clipping articles spanning the 1916 Cherokee CC Invitational tournament timeline and is a photo of the club's publication that photo referenced this exact trophy decades ago. This rare opportunity presents itself for the first time in nearly a decade, with the obvious uncertainty that it will even ever come again - act accordingly.
