Bobby Jones Signed Dom Lupo Grand Slam US Amateur at Merion Print - Only One Known
The famous amateur Bobby Jones' signed this golf art print approximately six years prior to his passing. This Dom Lupo 'Grand Slam' print was signed by Jones in blue ballpoint, with the full-name representing one of the finest examples uncovered from the ailing Jones and resulting in a one-of-a-kind gem oversized 'Grand Slam' piece. Revered 'Golf Magazine' artist and illustrator Dom Lupo produced this work for the 1965 August publication's 'Grand Slam Commemorative Issue.' Lupo's tenure at 'Golf Magazine' spanned 25 years, chosen as the artist for a number of other high profile works in the sporting industry including to hang on the walls of the World Golf Hall of Fame. This colorful artist depiction was of the fourth and final leg that memorable season for Bobby Jones, the US Amateur at Merion Country Club in Ardmore, Pennsylvania in late September. Jones is depicted in the middle of the fairway staring down an approach shot, with his caddy trailing.
A gentleman named George Trevor, then a sportswriter for the New York Sun, famously phrased Jones' four Major triumphs in 1930 as Jones "stormed the impregnable quadrilateral of golf." This event captivated the minds of most 1930's Americans whether they were golf fans or not, offering the opportunity to see one of the grandest moments in the Golden Age of Sport, Bobby Jones' accomplishment as the only player to win the pre-Masters era Grand Slam. James Spence Authentication (JSA) has reviewed this signature and their auction letter of authenticity #XX34079 comes with this lot.
