Bobby Jones Original News Service Photo 1929 U.S. Open Underwood & Underwood Type I PSA Authentic #84170751
Being in the right place at the right time, Bobby Jones was captured by an expert lensman from the Underwood and Underwood studio hitting an explosion shot out of the Winged Foot sand in this perfectly framed crystal clear image. Bobby's swing is well documented from flicker books to the movies, yet this still shot depicts the great golfer in championship form during the week in which he would capture his 3rd US Open title and 9th major. The photography experts of PSA reaffirmed its place atop the category issuing it a 'Type I' grade detailed in this encapsulation. This is a fine example of work of the revered Northeastern photography studio, specifically New York, New York of Underwood & Underwood - not far away from Winged Foot. The verso of this photo contains the original caption and studio stamping for media usage. Preserved and exhibited in the PSA encapsulation, presentation value is high with the only slight condition detractors being small chipping or paper loss on tips of bottom corners.
The 1929 United States Open, contested at Winged Foot Golf Club, saw Bobby Jones open with a first round 69, his sensational 31 on the back nine outstanding in all regards. At the end of four rounds of play Jones remained tied with Al Espinosa. The 36-hole playoff the next day saw Jones put a staggering 23 stroke exclamation point win in posting his third US Open Championship. Bobby Jones' performance was outstanding during the '29 Championship, remaining one of his signature moments. Legendary Course Designer A.W. Tillinghast crafted the exacting course that is Winged Foot which saw its first round played in 1923. Bobby Jones major winning material from the peak of his career as the darling of the "Golden Age of Sport." Photo is 8" x 10".
