Bobby Jones As Youth Swinging Original Photo by Hirshburg/Clifton Studio - John Roth Collection
This poignant new image seems to bridge the gap between a known photo of Jones swinging in 1911 at an early age, and a more widely seen image of Bobby swinging as a 14 year old in the 1916 U.S. Amateur. These three images provide a wonderful opportunity to analyze a similar developing grip and hand action in the young prodigy. This was formulated using Stewart Maiden, who had come on board from Scotland to be the head professional at Jones home course East Lake, as a template for a young Bobby developing his 'Carnoustie swing'. Offered in this lot is the one Original photo from hometown Atlanta, Georgia studio Hirshburg/Clifton. Earlier and later images of Jones show him outdoors as opposed to this studio image which displays exceptional clarity and contrast.The photo in near mint condition measures 4" x 6", inside a 7 3/4" x 11 1/2" overall frame size.
**THE JOHN ROTH COLLECTION**
The Ryder Cup Auction features many items from the collection of John Roth (1940-2015.) John spent 25 years amassing a collection of golf memorabilia and golf antiques that would rival most of the golf museums around the globe. John had a passion for the history and nuance of the game, its traditions and the ever-changing evolution of the manufacture of its equipment. John was a member of the Golf Collectors Society, and actively participated in many of its events around the country. John was also a long-time player in the Society of Hickory Golfers’ tournaments around the country, which honor the traditions of the game by playing with antique, wooden-shafted clubs. During his lifelong participation in the two organizations, John won or placed highly in several tournaments and made many lifelong friends with whom he found camaraderie in his pursuit of all things golf. It is his family’s wish that the items that John treasured so much find loving new homes where they can continue to be enjoyed and tell the history of the sport that meant so much to their husband and father.
