Ben Hogan Signed Major Wins Autograph
Ben Hogan, along with his supporters, and some golf historians considered the 1942 Hale American Open as sponsored and administered by the U.S.G.A. to be his first(and fifth overall career)U.S. Open Championship. It had over 1,500 entrants and the field was established through local and sectional qualifying with participation by the top names in the game including Mangrum, Wood, Demaret, Nelson, Runyan, Sarazen, Stranahan and Guldahl. To his dying day it was Hogan's strong feeling that this was his 10th Major. When in 1989, he was asked to sign a 8 3/4 X 11 sheet of paper which listed his 9 career recognized majors, Ben obliged with his autograph and in his own hand added with the same pen he used to sign his autograph the notation "1942" next to his other U.S. Open Championships. This created a remarkable piece of Hogan memorabilia lending an insight into "Bantom Ben's" intensity, and feelings some 49 years after the event occurred. A portion of the Frank Stranahan collection proceeds will be donated to The First Tee of Lake Erie.
