Babe Zaharias' Personal Metal Putting Green Heart Markers From Tampa G&CC (Forrest Hills)

Babe Zaharias' heart shaped pins in this lot, from the foundation, are original to the former Forrest Hills Golf and Country Club located in the Forrest Hills development in north Tampa. The final photo shows Zaharias on the then Forrest Hills practice green with one of these heart markers (with a loop on top) to the left - for reference only. The Moorish/Mediterranean style architecture was popular in many areas of the Florida land boom. The course and clubhouse were built in 1926 and became an attraction to the locals along with the snowbirds and foreign investors. When Babe and George Zaharias purchased the course in 1950 it had begun to decline, the owners were anxious to move back to their roots. The Zaharias’ brought cash to the table and closed the deal in less than thirty days. This was the resurrection for the Forrest Hills Country Club that was given fresh paint inside and out, as well as a course redesign from the original yardage of 7192 down to a more preferred 6200-6500 yards. Babe was The Babe Zaharias Foundation Founder and President Hal Shaw's mentor and surrogate mother, when he was fifteen. Shaw got to caddy for Babe and her friends, the super stars of the fifties. From the foundation comes this prized set of 1-9 heart shaped metal markers from Babe Zaharias' estate. 7" x 31." A signed letter of provenance from The Babe Zaharias Foundation comes with this lot.
