A tantalizing gift in secret to Babe Zaharias or simply a kind gesture from her protégé? While we won't ever know for for certain, this chair's origin story is surrounded by intrigue. This intricately carved wooden Norwegian 'Wedding' chair was a gift to Babe Zaharias from her protégé and very close friend Betty Dodd after spotting it during a shopping trip with the two of them. Dodd, yearning for the affection of Zaharias, heard The Babe's story about how her father bought one of a similar ilk for her mother and grew up with that chair in her childhood home. As the legend has it, Babe told her husband George that it was bad luck to touch the chair which she leaned up against the wall. Why? Babe didn't want George to read the back nameplate that Dodd had engraved for her on Christmas 1954. 'To Babe Always Betty December 25, 1954' is hand tooled on it. Sitting on the tall single panel wooden back is a hand-carved scantily clad female with her hair up and looking to her right. Babe Didrickson Zaharias was an alluring figure, aside from likely the single greatest athlete of all-time. 19" x 18 1/2" x 51 1/2"
