Babe Zaharias Hand Painted Original Bobby Jones Playing Cribbage - Framed
It was during the Titleholder’s tournament in Augusta Georgia that Babe and Bobby Jones spent many hours in
each other’s company as student and teacher. Babe loved and admired the southern gentleman who treated her
like another daughter and member of the Jones family. Bobby also enjoyed spending time with Big George
Zaharias, Babe’s husband. This threesome spent many evenings together after Babe’s challenging rounds in
Augusta. They would occasionally show up at the Town Tavern, one of the most popular and
historic places in Augusta. Then it was off to stop by one of the city’s well-known prominent citizens that had made
them promise to join him and his family for a late-night cap before retiring. The tournament was over so they
could sleep in the next day before packing up and heading back to Tampa. However, they had promised Bobby
they would visit with him and share a hearty lunch and take a few photos along with hugs all around.
Babe’s shots
with her camera captured Big George and Bobby in a game of cribbage along with other candid photos. The
cribbage game photo stood out for Babe, so she attempted to paint Bobby in this reflecting image, and she signed
her finished work “BDZ.” Zaharias never presented it to Jones, like first anticipated. Big
George would eventually hang her painting of Bob here over the fireplace in their then new home on Lake Eckles in Tampa Florida. This is presented from The Babe Zaharias Collection, by way of The Babe Zaharias Foundation. The impressionist style work using primarily warm colors was quite well done, along with capturing the likeness of Bobby Jones. A signed letter from the founder of the Zaharias Golf Foundation, Hal Shaw, will accompany this lot. 24" x 27"
