What a unique piece of golf history. This wonderful trophy was boxed away among other personal items from the Zaharias estate and comes to us by way of The Babe Zaharias Foundation. In 1984 Pete Pihos gave the trophy to George Zaharias who was in the hospital after a severe heart attack. This story began with Pete Pihos meeting the young and upcoming Arthur Ashe who was volunteering his tennis talents in developing a junior tennis program at the Oak Hill Country Club in Richmond Virginia. Several weeks had elapsed when Pete was informed that his partner for the upcoming club’s member-guest tournament would be out of town. After numerous calls and no success, Pete thinks of his newfound friend young Arthur Ashe, who after hearing Pete’s dilemma accepts the invitation but warns him of his past golfing mishaps. As this one-of-a-kind museum candidate trophy reveals that HOF Pete Pihos and young African American tennis prodigy Arthur Ashe take home a trophy from this event that reads, Oak Hill CC, 1967 Member-Guest, Low Net 3rd Place, Pete Pihos and Arthur Ashe. 7" x 3" x 15." A signed letter of provenance from The Babe Zaharias Foundation comes with this lot.
