A.E. Lard 'Whistler' Spalding Gold Medal Accurate Mid-Iron Pat'd 1914-1915
Allan Lard's patented club offered in this lot is one of the very first steel shafted irons. The "Whistler" Mid Iron gets it's name from swinging the club under certain conditions and achieving a 'whistle' sound. Allan Lard designed these “perforated” shafts that actually whistled when swung. Often referred to “Lard’s Whistle Shaft” and has six sides literally filled with holes to lighten the shaft. Head marked: “Spalding Gold Medal” with patent dates. Refer to the pictures to get a close-up view of the rare single piece of bored out steel used as the shaft. Six sided steel with many small holes in order to lighten the club, and heralded as "the club of the future" by Spalding, it was the prime option for those looking to achieve a perfect shaft. This example is in good condition. All serious collections involving golf history cannot make such a claim without this club accompanying it. This club is referenced in Jeff Ellis's 'Clubmakers Art' 2nd edition Vol. II Golf Book on page 658.
