1999 Ryder Cup at Brookline Team USA Awarded Ryder Cup Trophy to Hal Sutton

The wait is over! This champion's prize represents the only 1999 Ryder Cup trophy offered at auction awarded to one of the twelve players on that heroic United States Team. Better yet, the pinnacle of modern day Ryder Cup artifacts is sourced directly from The Hal Sutton Collection - the single greatest contributor of points to the most iconic and improbable come-from-behind biennial matches victory. Hal accounted for 3 1/2 of the 14 1/2 total point tally. That number gave the United States the narrowest margin of victory over the Europeans sans a tie. Difficult to look away from, this Ryder Cup exudes excellence in the classic trophy design that Samuel Ryder began in 1927. Wrapping around the circumference of the top of the plinth the cup trophy rests on are the facsimile signatures of the team including Tiger Woods, Payne Stewart and Phil Mickelson and the meaningful identifying engraving in uppercase "Hal Sutton - The Country Club - 1999." Precious metal makers marks are found upon examination at the bottom of the band. "The Ryder Cup" is carefully added to the back side of the bowl. This centerpiece is without any hesitation deserving of inclusion in the finest golf collections of the world, be it private or that of institutional or public nature.

Ryder Cup lore will tell the story for as long as the tournament is played. The 1999 Ryder Cup at The Country Club at Brookline is known as the "The Battle of Brookline" and the most celebrated and unlikely United States Ryder Cup victory in recent memory. The Europeans lead 10-6 prior to the final round, needing merely 4 points on that Sunday to retain the Cup. Justin Leonard drained a 45 foot putt to win the Ryder Cup for the Americans, overcoming the seemingly insurmountable deficit that the Europeans had worked so hard to achieve. A signed letter of provenance from Hal Sutton will accompany this lot. The gold plated 925 sterling quality silver trophy stands 12" tall with a diameter of 4 1/2" and measures 6" from handle to handle. A gold plated 925 sterling quality silver plaque also wraps around the base (or plinth), displaying the engraved signatures of the United States team members and captain, as well as the year and host The Country Club. The trophy weighs nearly 2lbs (1.70lbs or .75kg) including the plinth.
