1992 Women's US Open @ Oakmont C.C. 18th Hole Course Flown Flag Signed by Winner Patty Sheehan

In 1992 at age 35 Patty Sheehan thought she might be too old to win the Championship she wanted the most, the one which was missing from her Hall of Fame resume, the United States Women's Open. With that goal in mind to win the 1992 Women's U.S. Open to be held in Oakmont, Pennsylvania at the Oakmont Country Club, Sheehan dispatched her longtime caddy Carl Laib (our consignor of this historical lot) to Oakmont a week before her arrival to come up with a comprehensive game plan to obtain victory. Following one of Laib's many suggestions,"patience in attacking Oakmont, with the initial goal being to keep the ball in the Fairway", Patty Sheehan won the U.S.G.A. Championship in an 18 hole Monday play-off over Juli Inkster by two strokes. Sheehan summed up the wins importance, "It was certainly one of the biggest moments of my career. Not only for the win, but because I was marching toward the Hall of Fame and I needed two different majors to get in at that point along with 30 tournament wins." Sheehan would close out her career a 6 time Major champ, 35 LPGA Tour event winner, with a 1993 induction to the World Golf Hall of Fame. As per long standing golf tradition, Sheehan's caddy Laib was afforded the honor of claiming the 18th hole flag which flew at Oakmont during the Championship Monday. That flag which flew in the Championship is offered here with personalized autograph from Sheehan her caddy Carl Laib and states as follows in black marker:
Carl
You're the best of the best!
Love
Patty Sheehan

It is seldom that the opportunity arises to obtain a course flown flag from one of the United States Golf Association's Majors, it is almost unheard of to have the opportunity to secure the flag which flew on the 18th hole. Flag has cut mark on left side where mounting tube was in place. Other then that modification, flag carries consistent wear from use over play in a Championship event. James Spence Authentication (JSA) has reviewed the signature of Patty Sheehan, and their letter of authenticity will come with this lot.

OUR CONSIGNOR CADDY HALL OF FAMER CARL S. LAIB
Carl Laib was inducted in 2002 into the Caddy Hall of Fame. The '02 class marked the fourth year of inductions for this dedicated group of individuals who have given so much to the game of golf. Laib spent his career on the L.P.G.A. circuit guiding his players to 28 wins that included 7 Majors while he was on the bag. Among the payers he made a positive impact on while in their employment were L.P.G.A. Hall of Famers Betsy King and Patty Sheehan. With his numerous accomplishments in the game, and a work ethic that is second to none with execution of assignments to precision he had earned his nickname in golf, "the Caddie Machine". Recognized in the ranks for having the most detailed accurate yardage books which had been obtained through diligent hours of course walking, Carl Laib became only the second caddy from the ranks of the L.P.G.A. to be honored with induction into the organizations Hall of Fame. The Golf Auction is honored to have the opportunity to work with the distinguished items from Mr. Laib's collection, our only wish is that the great stories he shared with us about his time on Tour could go along with these items. They kept us in uproarious laughter and awe throughout our visit.
