The Ocean Course at Kiawah Island, South Carolina was the site of the 1991 Ryder Cup dubbed "The War at the Shores". Both were apt names as this venue butts directly against the water, and for three days, September 27-29, the European and U.S. Ryder Cup Teams waged a memorable duel on the shores of South Carolina. The U.S. squad rallied the final day to claim the Ryder Cup (14 1/2-13 1/2) in the final singles match of the Sunday session. This set off a wild celebration which after closing ceremonies saw U.S. team members spill into the Atlantic Ocean (see photo below). Proudly presented is team member Mark O'Meara's Blue Ryder Cup Blazer straight from the water (via caddy Donnie Wanstall). This wool heirloom features a two-button style with a single-breasted and center-vented design. The interior of the fully lined coat features detailed patchs which include gold stitched "Custom Tailored For Mark O'Meara" gold and red stitched "Tailored-To-Measure For 1991 Ryder Cup 3", and the tailors tag "Hamilton Cincinnati". Hamilton Tailoring Company of Cincinnati is a famillar name to golf collectors as since 1967 they have been the main source of green jackets for the Augusta National members and their champions presentation jackets.Also inside an inner jacket pocket is the Union patch, Made in USA which states that this coat was made for Mark O'Mear(sic),Date 09/05/91. Both the front and sleeve buttons of this treasured beauty feature an ornate 18th hole flag and golf club design. Future Hall of Famer Mark O'Meara was a five-time Ryder Cupper (1985,89,91,97,99), and his 7 and 6 foursome win with Paul Azinger in the 1991 matches equalled the largest margin of victory in an 18-hole match. This eye-catching, scarcly scene team jacket comes from one of the most historically significant Ryder Cups of our time, this jacket with unimprovable provenance is a conversation piece for years to come in your collection.
This Lot is Part of the Donnie Wanstall Collection.The Golf Auction is excited to have been selected to auction off the Donnie Wanstall collection. Donnie was a PGA Tour caddy for many years carrying the bag for such major champions as Mark O'Meara, Curtis Strange, Tom Watson, and top PGA pros such as John Cook, Tom Purtzer and others. Donnie is a member of the Professional Caddies Association and was on the bag for 14 PGA tour wins and several Ryder Cup victories. In 1994 Donnie was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS) at the Players Championship.

His collection was amassed over many years of collecting items while on Tour as well as the kindness of many of his PGA friends and players. In 1994 there was a famous fundraising auction that netted over $150,000 for Donnie and helped to establish the formation of the Caddies Assistance Fund. At that auction PGA players such as Payne Stewart and others took the microphone to help auction off memorabilia to support the cause. Since then, Mark O'Meara has also been of assistance to Donnie in seeing that Tiger Woods autographed items from his major victories. All of these items come from Donnie directly with the items and autographs being directly obtained by him.
The Golf Auction wishes to be a part of the fight to find a cure for MS and will donate five percent (5%) of the gross sale price realized from the Wanstall collection to multiple sclerosis research.
