1976 Augusta National Press Letter with Clifford Roberts Resignation Content - Augusta Mayor Lewis "Pop" Newman
This 1976 Masters Tournament documents the stepping down of Chairman Clifford Roberts, and the succession of William H. Lane. This recap to the Press, Radio, and Television was sent to the 1973-1981 City of Augusta Mayor Lewis "Pop" Newman. Accompanying the four pages of information is the envelope from Augusta National which encased the letter. Signature of Roberts is a facsimile. Roberts was the Chairman of Augusta National Golf Club from 1931 through 1976, and was named "Chairman in Memoriam" after his death. He stepped down from his position following the 1976 contest, and in 1977 tragically took his own life on the Par 3 course at Augusta National. Dated April 19, 1976, it contains plenty of information including Ray Floyd's record accomplishments, Complete field, complete scores, a list of trophies, and cash distribution. Also provided is USGA & PGA representatives.
