1973 US Open at Oakmont CC Large Tournament Used Welcome Sign - 43" Diameter!
It's hard to believe that the suave blonde haired Johnny Miller's unprecedented final round carding of 63 was 50 years ago this June 17th. The story starring Miller, the man the current generation knows as a fairly blunt announcer, shooting the first 63 in major championship history to rally and win by a single shot took yet another unlikely turn when Miller owned up to the lack of technology in his bag later. “It was the oldest set of clubs [in relation] to the year it was played on Tour in the history of golf.”
Hanging in the historic USGA Championship city of Oakmont, Pennsylvania for that final round elevated on a telephone post was this sizeable and substantial painted welcome sign composed of particle board, certainly produced to last longer than just that week. We imagine it was hard to miss for those going to the tournament or merely making a routine trip the town's post office. The giant golf ball broadside with a shaded dimple background exhibits the stylized font headline: 'Oakmont Welcomes the 73rd Open at Oakmont C.C. June 14-17.'
An ancillary story with a new hero in relation to this piece emerges once the final putt was made. After play stopped our consignor, then a college student attending the tournament with his buddies that each spent the $10 to attend that Sunday, brought a souvenir back to the dorms in his patron friend's convertible. It has been with the first owner ever since, until the offering here - in hopes of the story continuing. It is 43" in diameter.

2. During extended bidding, you may bid only on items you PREVIOUSLY placed a bid on.
3. Lots with only ONE or NO BIDS will close at 10pm ET
Extended bidding starts at 10pm ET, and each lot will begin closing with its own 30-minute countdown timer. Lots without a bid placed during extended bidding will close at 10:30pm ET. We recommend you place your maximum bid(s) prior to that time. Thank you
