1954 US Amateur Champ Arnold Palmer Commemorative Contestant Badge - Limited Distribution
No less an authority then Jack Nicklaus calls the United States Golf Association's Amateur Championship a "Major." Whether it is or not is open to debate. What is known is that the 1954 US Amateur had a fellow who was selling paint in Cleveland (Arnold Palmer) put his golf game to test over a week of gritty match play, and crowned him champion by virtue of a 1-up win in the 36 hole finals match. That weeks event was contested at The Country Club of Detroit, and it is what Mr. Palmer considers the turning point of his career. Offered here for bidders is a commemorative contestant badge from the 1954 Amateur that bears Palmer's name. It measures 1 1/2" x 1 1/2" and comes in great condition. These were produced and distributed by the United States Golf Association in 2017 to commemorate the achievements of Arnold Palmer over his hall of fame career. A similar pin appeared at this years US Open recognizing Arnie's win at the 1960 US Open and it was available to each attendee at Sunday's round of the Championship. These became a big hit on the secondary market. Expecting far, far smaller crowds to attend the 2017 US Amateur a very limited number of these 1954 US Amateur Champion Arnold Palmer Commemorative Contestants badges were produced. So few in fact that many collectors still do not even know that this item exists.
