1953 Greater Greensboro Open 1st Place Amateur Trophy
As Sam Snead dominated the Greater Greensboro Open's professional division winning the event a PGA record, for any single tournament, eight times. So Frank Stranahan dominated the amateur division of the event claiming the low amateurs trophy four times. Stranahan, regarded as the World's foremost medal play amateur, was at it again at the 1953 Greensboro Open conducted at the Segefield C.C. His aggregate score of 281 for the four rounds placed him up the leader board comprised of both pros and amateurs, a scant six strokes behind the overall professional score. His 281 score was easily low among the not-for-pay gang. Stranhan's award for his four rounds of golf proficiency was one of the finest looking trophies ever presented to a champion of any sport. Of extreme grand size and detail from its wood base to the golfer at its pinnacle the trophy measures a whopping 40" tall and 11" wide. The plate of recognition of golf achievement on this trophy states "Greater Greensboro Open First Place Amateur Frank Stranahan 1953 Golf Tournament". The overall aesthetics of the beautiful award have barely been affected some sixty plus years after its presentation. A portion of the Frank Stranahan collection proceeds will be donated to The First Tee of Lake Erie.
