1951 Ryder Cup Dinner Menu Signed by 9 U.S.Team Members, Horton Smith & Joe DiMaggio
Offered is an October 22nd, 1951 'Honouring Ryder Cup Teams of the United States and Great Britain' at the Waldorf Astoria, New York City menu that measures 8 1/4" x 11". The United States team was headed by playing captain Sam Snead. This excellent condition menu which still contains its tassel has been signed by Snead and eight other victorious U.S. team members which include Lloyd Mangrum, Jimmy Demaret, Ed'Porky'Oliver, Jack Burke, Clayton Heafner, Skip Alexander, Dutch Harrison and Henry Ransom. Prized first Masters champion Horton Smith (who was the secretary of the PGA at the time) has also signed this menu with a pers. of Hi Terry. Four additional signatures of media/dignitaries are to also be found highlighted by John Derr, the famed Chronicler of Golf. Finally the last autograph (which stands by itself in the upper right hand corner) had little to do with golf but sure a lot to do with sports and New York. Joe DiMaggio who was the toast of the town after leading the Yankees to the World Series title 12 days earlier on October 10. This final game 6 of the World Series in which Joe D. doubled and was intentionally walked twice marked the last game of his historic career. Back to golf, the United States team easily defeated the British squad in the 1951 Ryder Cup matches held at Pinehurst 9 1/2-2 1/2. Maybe two of the heroes of the United States team had learned a lesson from DiMaggio as both Demaret and Ben Hogan retired from playing roles in future Ryder Cups.
