1949 Babe D. Zaharias United States Open Champion's Contestants Pin Medal
This lot features a Nr-Mint condition USGA past Champion's pin worn by Babe Didrickson Zaharias during competition in the 1949 U.S.G.A. hosted Women's Open. Zaharias, was the defending champ in '49 and thus had a special color scheme on her contestants badge, and she would be in contention again finishing runner-up that year to Louise Suggs who led wire-to-wire in winning the first of her two United States Women's Open titles. "The Babe" was a 10 time LPGA Major winner and as Charles McGrath of The New York Times wrote "Except perhaps for Arnold Palmer, no golfer has ever been more beloved by the gallery." Babe was an athlete her whole life, earning 3 Olympic medals in Los Angeles 1932, silver for the high jump and gold for both the javelin throw and the 80 m hurdles. This is truly a piece of sporting and in particular golf history sure to be a treasured addition any collection!
