1947 Western Golf Championship Runner-Up Medal - Frank Stranahan

Frank Stranahan in 1947 at the Western Golf Association Amateur golf championship held at Wakonda Club in Des Moines, Iowa was defending his 1946 Western Amateur golf championship, and he came as close as you can come without repeating. In a par-busting 36-hole match play final battle (the rematch of the '46 final) with Marvin "Bud" Ward, "Strany" fell by the slimmest of margins 1-up to his rival Ward. In defeat Stranahan's efforts at the 1947 Western Amateur will long be rememeberd for his quarter final match against Hall of Famer William (Bill) Campbell. In that hard fought match Stranahan would capture a 2 and 1 victory over Campbell, but the remarkable feat was that Frank had THREE EAGLES over the 17 holes. Truly one for the record books. For his second place finish Stranahan received the scalloped edged medal offered here. The silver award proudly displays the crest of the Western Golf Association Amateur Championship on the front of the 1 3/8' diameter medal. This treasure resides below an adorning black ribbon that bears its affixing clasp. Engraving on the verso of the medal proclaims: Runner-Up Frank Stranahan 1947 A portion of Front reads:
