1944 Beverly Hills Open Program Signed by Winner Byron Nelson-Montague, Zaharias
Byron Nelson and several top professionals of the day teed it up August 4-6, 1944 at the Beverly Hills Open in Los Angeles, California. This grouping of professionals were on the West Coast preparing for the PGA Championship which would be held in Spokane the following week. This program comes intact including a two page center pairing sheet for the two round finale which was contested on August 6, 1944. The featured group that day included Toney Penna who led after the first two rounds, Nelson who would eventually win the event as he did so many in the 1944 and '45 seasons, and host pro John "Mysterious" Montague. Montague was the renowned trick shot artist and golf hustler who drove the ball up to 350 yards off the tee. Also of note on this pairing sheet is the participation of Babe Zaharias who had recently had her amateur status returned by the United States Golf Association. With all these intricacies it is easy to see how this excellent condition program from the Rolling Hills Country Club is a winner. And yes, the winner of the event Nelson (1944 Associated Press Male Athlete of the Year) has cover signed the program in black sharpie. James Spence Authentication (JSA) provides authenticity for the Byron Nelson autograph contained in this lot.
