1939 Amateur-Pro Winners Georgian Sterling Silver Plate - Frank Stranahan & "Jug" McSpaden
As a 16-year-old Frank Stranahan was already taking his game to a high level playing in the Pinehurst Amateur-Pro event which was played on March 19th, 1939. He teamed in the event with top PGA professional Harold "Jug" McSpaden. The seasoned professional McSpaden; participated in the initial 1934 Masters and had finished second to Denny Shute in the 1937 PGA championship. This duo of rising star and leading PGA player proved insurmountable to the Pinehurst field. For his triumph young Stranny won the offered ornate platter. The front of which details the teams achievement "Amateur-Pro Pinehurst, N.C. March 19,1939 Won By Frank Stranahan & Partner Harold McSpaden. The verso of this gorgeous 11" in diameter silver platter is engraved "A221 Sterling Hand Chased" and "Georgian". This earliest winners award from what was to be a long line of Stranahan golf honors displays with minimal handling wear with no notable condition distractions. A portion of the Frank Stranahan collection proceeds will be donated to The First Tee of Lake Erie.
